Primasens, Mülheim, Oberhausen, Sylt: Germany’s debt kings

Kleinmachnow, 14 June 2022 – In terms of population, Pirmasens has the highest debt level of all German municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants. It is followed by Mülheim an der Ruhr, Oberhausen and Sylt. This is shown in an evaluation by EDS. In absolute figures, Cologne has remained ahead of Essen and Dortmund for six years.

“Municipal debt is still very high,” says Peter Hoffmann, founder and CTO at EDS. “With almost 160 billion euros, the municipalities are in the red.” And this does not include the city states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen. All figures refer to 2020, the latest available. “During the pandemic, the debts have certainly not become less,” says Hoffmann.
